120 Solved Puzzles for Linux, Bash, and the Command Line

120 command-line puzzles built from things that really go wrong — a file that won’t delete, a disk that stays full after you empty it, a script that runs by hand but fails in cron. Work out why first, then see exactly what the shell did.

About this book
Knowing a Linux command and knowing why it misbehaved are two different skills. This book trains the second one. Each puzzle sets up a real situation — an off-by-one count, a permission that blocks the owner, a variable that vanishes inside a script — and asks you to explain what happened before you turn to the answer. The explanations show precisely how the shell behaved and where the same trap turns up elsewhere. Every command, output line and error message was run on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Bash 5.2 and the standard GNU tools, so you can reproduce each result on your own machine. Eight parts move from the terminal itself through files and permissions, pipes and redirection, searching and text processing with grep, sed and awk, processes and signals, and the shell environment, to Bash scripting — plus fifteen “Linux detective” debugging cases. Three difficulty levels, a command reference, signal table, permissions chart and glossary round it out. Written for developers, sysadmins, DevOps engineers, computer-science students, self-taught programmers and anyone preparing for a Linux interview.
